ME AND HER

Author and performer Caroline Gauthier recounts caring for her mother in the final stages of cancer and her subsequent solo trip through India, equipped with her mother’s fourteen year old copy of the Lonely Planet. The story weaves through the traffic of Old Dehli, beyond travels past and present, to land at its final destination. The narrative reconnects mother and daughter’s travel journals as they find themselves joined together in the same locations over a decade apart.

Me and Her is a journey through death and life. Where do our parents’ legacy end and our own identity begin? When do we truly become ourselves? And when is it time to finally come home?

ABOUT THE 2024 FRINGE PRODUCTION

This production brings together a talented team of artists, including award-winning theatre director and veteran Fringe producer Paul Van Dyck and emerging sound artist and composer Joey Zaurrini, known for his expertise in sound mapping and storyscapes. Caroline Gauthier carefully selected each collaborator based on their unique sensitivity and approach to storytelling. She chose artists whose work she deeply admires and whom she also cares about as people.

The show is partly based on writing and journal entries created around and after her mother’s death in the spring of 2023. The genesis of the show occurred when Caroline shared excerpts of her writing with fellow creator and award-winning playwright Mael Cheff, who insisted the material should be made public. Mael immediately joined as a story consultant.

CONFABULATIONS MONTREAL

Caroline’s desire to approach the topic of death with honesty was reinforced by the positive response she received after sharing part of her story at the Confabulations event “Lies I Told My Parents” in March 2024:

Caroline Gauthier is an emerging storyteller with a gift for accenting the dramatic and humorous — all the better to make her stories relatable. She catches you off guard with a moment and then drives the emotional weight home. I’m really looking forward to her solo show this Fringe.
